A group of Pittsburg State University students, faculty and staff gathered on their lunch break Tuesday to begin a new season of Exercise on the Oval. The program of stretching, light exercise and walking is part of the Exercise is Medicine initiative sponsored by Student Health Services, Campus Recreation and students and faculty in the Exercise Science Degree program.
Mike Leiker, an associate professor in the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation, said the exercise program focuses on light activity and is designed not only to get students, faculty and staff up and moving, but also to inspire a regular exercise program.
“There is good evidence that adding even small amounts of exercise to your daily routine can have a positive effect on your health,” Leiker said.
By conducting the exercises on the Oval, Leiker said, he hopes to inspire others, including those who may not join the group, to make exercise part of their daily routine.
Janice Jewett, who is also an associate professor in the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation, said maintaining a regular exercise routine is an important key to success.
“If you make it a habit to exercise at specific times on specific days, then it’s likely you’ll stick to the schedule,” Jewett said. “One way to do that is to enroll in a fitness class. It’s convenient and will help you stick to a routine because attendance is important.”
Another way to keep up an exercise routine is to get an exercise buddy who will hold you accountable.
“If you can’t join a class, then get a friend and schedule your exercise dates,” Jewett said.
Jewett said there is no shortage of opportunities for exercise on campus and in the community.
“There are sand volleyball courts, risbee golf, parks with trails for walking, jogging and biking, and many other options,” Jewett said.
Exercise on the Oval takes place at 11:50 a.m. and at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The 30-minute sessions all begin with a time for stretching.
