Lee, Werner Garner MIAA Athlete of the Week Honors
Overland Park, Kan. -- Pittsburg State University's Venessa Lee and Traci Werner each garnered Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Athlete of the Week honors for women's outdoor track & field Tuesday (Apr. 17). Lee, a 5-foot-7 junior from Cleveland, Mo., was named the MIAA Track Athlete of the Week, while Werner, a 5-foot-9 senior from Nevada, Mo., was named the MIAA Field Athlete of the Week. Lee clocked the fastest 800-meter time in NCAA Division II this season with her sixth-place finish Friday (April 13) at the Mount San Antonio (Calif.) Relays. She finished with a time of 2 minutes, 9.53 seconds, as she finished behind three NCAA Division I competitors, a professional runner and an unattached athlete from Mexico. The time was just .53 seconds shy of the automatic qualifying standard for nationals. Lee, the runner-up in the 2006 NCAA Division II Outdoor 800 meters and the two-time defending NCAA-II Indoor 800 meter champion, is a graduate of Cass Midway High School. Werner won three events and recorded the top shot put mark in Division II this season as she helped the Gorillas claim the women's title at the Emporia State Papa John's Division II Challenge Sunday (April 15). She won the shot put by more than three feet, with a provisional qualifying mark of 49 feet, 1.25 inches. Werner smashed the previous school record in the event, established by Maria Guerrero in 1994, of 47-2.75. She also claimed wins in the hammer throw (a provisional qualifying mark of 167-4) and discus (141-1) to account for 30 of PSU's 130 points and earn women's field Athlete of the Meet honors. Werner is a graduate of Nevada High School.
