Dr. Craig Fuchs is Chair of the Department of Music, Acting Chair of the Art Department, and Associate Professor of Music at Pittsburg State University. In addition, he also serves as Director of Bands, overseeing all activities in the band program. His teaching responsibilities include conducting the Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds, as well as teaching conducting and wind literature at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Dr. Fuchs holds degrees in music education from Missouri Western State College and the University of Missouri-Columbia. He holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music where his primary conducting mentor was Gary Hill. He has additional instruction through workshops with Jack Stamp, H. Robert Reynolds, and Anthony Meillo. Dr. Fuchs had ten years of teaching experience in the public schools of Kansas and Missouri prior to moving to the collegiate level.
Dr. Fuchs has had numerous articles published in The Instrumentalist magazine. Under his leadership, the PSU Wind Ensemble performed at the 2006 KMEA Music Convention and in February of 2009, the newly formed PSU Chamber Winds performed at the KMEA Convention. Dr. Fuchs is in high demand as a conductor/clinician for regional and district honor bands as well as maintaining an active schedule as an adjudicator in the marching band arena each fall.
Dr. Fuchs' international conducting and adjudication experiences have taken him to England, France, and The Netherlands. In the summer of 2009, Fuchs expanded this international experience to South America where he appeared as a guest conductor with the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional del Paraguay in Ascuncion, Paraguay. This group is the National Symphony Orchestra for the country of Paraguay. As a guest of the orchestra and the US Embassy in Paraguay, Fuchs conducted one of the ten subscription series concerts of this ensemble. While in Paraguay, he was also invited to work with the Conservatory Band and the National Police Academy Band.
Fuchs had an active career as a performer on trumpet and was a member of the T.D. Pack Band, the official band of the Kansas City Chiefs, for 13 seasons. Dr. Fuchs holds memberships in MENC, KMEA, KBA, CBDNA, Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and is a member of the Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society.
