Modern Languages conducted an intensive eight-week Spanish immersion program during Summer 2012 for seven seminarians from the Catholic Diocese of Wichita and the Springfield Cape Girardeau Diocese. The men, enrolled for eleven credit hours alongside regular PSU students, attended classes taught by three faculty members five hours a day. Bishop Edward Rice of the Archdiocese of St. Louis joined the group for the July session. Eric Rojas taught Beginning Spanish Conversation during the June session and Hispanic Culture in Latin America during the July session. Roberta Shilane taught Spanish Language & Culture I throughout the summer. Monte McFerron taught Spanish Language & Culture II. Native speaker conversation partners, Dani Ayala and Yeimi Lee, provided by the program, worked individually with the men outside of class for additional practice.
Seminarians were awarded a certificate of completion at a celebratory lunch on July 26th. Faculty and staff, including Kathy Dyer, Brittany Hilbert, and Kirby Kroeker, served dishes they love to make for friends and family: empanadas de queso (Chile), enchiladas de pollo (Mexico), enchiladas de carne (Mexico), arroz mexicano (Mexico), chips and salsa (Mexico), guacamole (Mexico), brigadeiro (Brazil), and pastafrola (Argentina). Also in attendance were College of Arts and Sciences Dean Karl Kunkel, Assistant Dean Bobby Winters, and Megan Corrigan, Assistant Director of International Programs. Father Michael Simone of the Diocese of Wichita and Modern Languages Chair Judy Berry-Bravo are planning a similar immersion program for Summer 2013.
