Ceramicist Kate Nelson’s exhibit “it was a small country everyone was famous” will show in the University Gallery March 27 thru May 2, 2014. The artist will deliver a public lecture on Thursday, March 27 at 4:00pm in Room 103 of Porter Hall, with a reception to follow.

Creating dual vessels, paired together to both complete and complement each other, Nelson explores the complex nature of relationships and interactions.

Abstracting the human form, simplified to the point of unrecognition, Nelson imparts aspects of the body at ease into the structure and hand of the vessels. The forms interact in a demure manner typical of first and chance encounters. Through reduction fire, and use of waxes, sands, and sandblasting, Nelson grafts the visual and physical texture of skin completing the human allusion.

Nelson Received her BS in Liberal Arts from Southern Illinois University, and her MFA in Ceramics from the Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas.  She is currently the Studio Arts Technician at Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX.
