PSU to host solar eclipse watch party

Monday, Aug. 21 is a big day at Pittsburg State University for multiple reasons.

Not only is it the first day of the fall semester, but it’s also the day when campus and community will gather to take in the total solar eclipse.

In conjunction with KOAM/FOX14, Pitt State will host the Great Gorilla Eclipse watch party from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the north side of Carnie Smith Stadium. The event will feature food, music and a variety of activities to celebrate this rare and exciting occasion.

“It’s not very often that we get to witness a solar eclipse, and we’re very excited to host this watch party on campus,” said Jenny Hellwig, creative services director at PSU. “It’s really a cool way to celebrate the eclipse and the first day of classes at the same time.”

During the event, KOAM will hand out 1,000 pairs of eclipse viewing glasses so those in attendance can watch safely.

“We’re very excited to join PSU in hosting this eclipse watch party,” said Vance Lewis, promotions manager at KOAM TV. “This is such a rare and exciting thing, and we believe people should be together and enjoy it with friends.”

For those who want a close-up look of the eclipse phenomenon, PSU’s physics department will have telescopes set up at the watch party. The telescopes will include special lens filters that ensure safety while viewing.

Those attending the watch party from off campus are encouraged to park in the lot across the street from the Wilkinson Alumni Center, which is located on the northeast corner of Ford and Joplin. The parking lot is located across Ford Street to the south.
