Katherine Strause  will exhibit “Cut and Tie” in the Harry Krug Gallery March 10 – May 2, 2014. The artist will present a public lecture Monday, March 10 from 10:00-11:00 am in Room 103 of Porter Hall, with a reception to follow.  Her exhibit is in support of Women’s History Month.

Strause uses found photographs to serve as source material for her large-scale paintings. Discarded family album photos, archived civil rights photography, and beauty pageant publicity photographs all find their way into the amassed narrative composed by the artist. Piecing components while changing the design and placement within the source come together to add new meaning and pretense as the artist works within this context to explore the perspective of “Woman.”  From experiences of joy, to heartache, pain to survival, Strause aims to encourage her audience to interpret her images as she has while exploring the provocative nature of the images.

Strause received her BFA University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and her MFA at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. She serves the Chair of the Department of Art and is an Associate Professor of Painting at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
