The College of Arts and Sciences

The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college, boasting 12 departments, 3 interdisciplinary units, and more than 50 degree programs! Our programs span a wide variety of fields from the humanities, like English, Art, and History, to the natural sciences, like Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The College also houses the Irene Ransom Bradley School of Nursing.

Dr. Mary Carol PomattoDr. Mary Carol Pomatto named dean

Pittsburg State University Provost Lynette Olson has announced the appointment of Mary Carol Pomatto as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Pomatto has served as interim dean of the college since mid January. Previously, she was director of PSU’s Irene Ransom Bradley School of Nursing.

“In her service as interim dean, Dr. Pomatto has represented the entire college equitably, addressing many complex issues in a timely and professional manner, and has made a positive contribution to Provost’s Leadership Council,” Olson said.  continue reading>> 

Featured Program: Communication Department

CommunicationThe Master of Arts degree in Communication is designed to prepare graduate students for professional and academic careers. It also encourages thoughtful and continuing study in subjects of the student's interest. Our graduate students are encouraged to work with a variety of faculty, and integrate advanced coursework from outside the department in order to become well-rounded in their studies.

2016 Midwest Quarterly Stephen Meats Poetry Prize

Dr. Stephen MeatsMidwest Quarterly establishes the Stephen Meats Poetry Prize

The Midwest Quarterly has announced that it is establishing the Stephen Meats Poetry Prize, which will award $500 to the author of the best poem published in the four issues (October, January, April, July) that make up each volume of Quarterly.  Poet Stephen Meats, chairperson emeritus and professor emeritus of English at PSU, joined the PSU English Department in 1979, taught courses in both American Literature and creative writing, retiring from the department in 2014.  He served as the poetry editor of The Midwest Quarterly from 1985 until 2016.  continue reading>>
