English - MA with emphasis in Literature, Creative Writing, Professional/Technical Writing, Composition & Rhetoric Overview

Type: Pre-Professional

If you want a Master of Arts with a major in English, you must choose one of the following emphases: Literature, Creative Writing, Professional/Technical Writing, Composition and Rhetoric. You must also present evidence of the successful completion of at least 24 semester hours of undergraduate English above the freshman level, preferably including survey courses in both English and American literature; one course in linguistics, modern grammar, or the history of the English language; and one upper division writing course. Graduate Admission Requirements

English (MA):

Admission to the English program requires at least 24 hours of undergraduate level English coursework beyond the freshman level, including one course in linguistics, modern grammar or the history of the English language and one upper division writing course. For International students, a TOEFL score of 550/79 or an IELTS score of 6.5 overall and in all bands is required. The following TOEFL section scores (or their IELTS equivalency) are also required:

  • Listening: 16
  • Speaking: 20
  • Reading: 20
  • Writing: 20

Applicants cannot substitute the Intensive English Program for the TOEFL for admission to this department.
