Department of Art Overview
The Department of Art realizes the value of individualized instruction. As art faculty members each of us is committed to the development of all students' full potentials. Our mission is to provide an educational context within which students can pursue knowledge and skills in a number of art fields. Each student is introduced to a broad range of aesthetic and stylistic positions through the study of art studio, art history and art education. We are all active exhibiting artists and research scholars in our respective art fields.
Undergraduate Degree Programs
Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), Major in Art
A professional degree program intended to satisfy entrance requirements for graduate programs or provide foundational art skills and attitudes that art basic for entry into the art related job market. Students choose one of four Emphases: Ceramics, Commercial Art, Jewelry Design, or Painting.
Bachelor of Science in Education, Major in Art Education
A professional teaching degree that prepares students for art teaching certification in elementary and secondary schools
Minor in Art (Non-Teacher Certification Minor)
Those seeking aesthetic or art historical knowledge, visual thinking and/or technical art skills to complement or expand their major courses of study should choose a minor in art. Programs such as commercial graphics, photography, family and consumer science, technical education, recreation-al therapies, and public relations often find art a useful complement.
Graduate Degree Program
Option I-Art Studio
This option is for those who wish to concentrate in one of the following studio areas: drawing, design, painting, printmaking, crafts, jewelry, weaving, ceramics, sculpture, or photography. It is appropriate for those interested in contemporary art issues and practices and is designed to support continued advanced study in studio art
Option II-Art Education
This option is for those interested in research and practice in the field of art education. It is appropriate for those who are now art teachers or those interested in educational issues and aspects of art in public or private institutions. There is a strong studio component to this option.
