International Teaching Minor

The International Teaching minor is designed to prepare teacher candidates to meet the needs of students with exceptionalities in the general education classroom. Additionally, this minor serves to prepare teacher candidates for the Master of Science in Special Education High/Low Incidence program. This minor is open to non-education majors who plan to work in careers involving students with exceptionalities. This minor does not lead to a teaching license or endorsement to a teaching license.

Why Pitt State?

This minor consists of six undergraduate courses designed to support the teacher candidate become a professional educator who is proficient in teaching students with exceptionalities in the general education classroom.  The coursework is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities of candidates to collaborate with professionals, implement inclusive practices, and instruct students with diverse learning needs.  Course content includes theory and research related to inclusion, professional collaboration and the Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA), implementation of instructional strategies, multi-tiered system of support, and clinical experiences.

Career Options

Special Education teaching is identified nationally and in Kansas as a high need field.  Graduates with this minor leave with the knowledge, skills, and strategies required to enhance their ability as a:

  • General Education classroom teacher in any Grade K-6 or content area (Grades 6-12) (with teaching license)
  • Candidate in a Masters in Special Education degree (with teaching license)
  • Work with students with disabilities outside a school setting

Internship and research opportunities for International Teaching majors

There are two required field experiences as part of this minor.  The Diversity Project requires candidates to observe and teach for 10 hours in a classroom setting with one student with exceptionalities.  The capstone course for the Inclusive Education minor is Professional Collaboration in Inclusive Settings.  There are 30 required hours of field experience in any grade level from kindergarten through grade 12.  Candidates work with a small group of English Language Learners developing lesson plans, teaching, and assessing student work.  A portfolio of candidate work that meets the Kansas ESOL standards is required.  Candidates are encouraged to participate in research as part of this minor.
