Hundreds of Pittsburg State University students are expected to gather for an all-night party to celebrate the success of a student-driven fundraiser for a children’s hospital.
The results of this year’s Up ‘til Dawn fund-raising campaign will be announced early Friday morning, Feb. 19, in the PSU Student Recreation Center and Kansas National Guard Armory, following a night of festivities including games, live bands, a comedian and more.
“It’s a recognition and thank-you to all the teams who helped us out all semester,” said Wesley Moore, Up ‘til Dawn member.
Last year’s Up ‘til Dawn teams raised $19,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a nonprofit organization based in Memphis, Tenn., which treats children regardless of their ability to pay. Each year, students stay up late writing letters soliciting donations from community members.
Moore said he expects this year’s attendance and fundraising results to top last year’s already impressive amount. More than 150 volunteers participated in this year’s campaign.
“Last year we had around 300 people come to the celebration, and we’re expecting to meet and exceed that this year,” Moore said.
Moore said there will be plenty of things to keep students busy until this year’s take is announced at 2:45 a.m. An inflatable jousting arena, dodgeball games, movies, food and more will fill the rec center.
Everyone is welcome to attend the party, but Up ‘til Dawn asks for donations from those who were not part of a fundraising team.
“There’s also this thing called a Target wish list, which has items needed by the kids,” Moore said. “We tried to put them all over campus, so you can bring an item in or make a small donation.”
Another way to help out the St. Jude staff is through a promotion at Applebee’s.
“Anyone who goes to Applebee’s before the finale on Thursday, 10 percent of their meal goes straight to St. Jude if they notify their server,” Moore said.
