Students and faculty at Pittsburg State University will celebrate 2011 International Education Week Nov. 14-18 with a full schedule of activities, ranging from the educational to the entertaining.
"This is a week we look forward to all year long," said Cathy Lee Arcuino, associate director of International Programs and Services at PSU. "It gives our students a chance to share their cultures with the community."
This fall has been a record-setting semester for PSU regarding international student enrollment. There are nearly 500 international students enrolled this fall - a 4.7 percent increase from last year. Forty-one countries are represented including new students from Vietnam, Croatia, and Côte d'Ivoire.
From a lecture by PSU President Steve Scott about his international experiences to a performance by Pakistani Rock Star Salman Ahmad, Arcuino said the special week will offer something for everyone: "We really try to include a wide variety of events that will give everyone a chance to learn something new about the world," she said.
The events begin at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13, with the observance of Eid-Al-Adha, the Muslim "Festival of Sacrifice," in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom of the Overman Student Center. The event, sponsored by the Saudi Student Association, commemorates the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. Tickets are required.
Each day from Monday, Nov. 14, through Friday, Nov. 18, presentations highlighting different nations and cultures will be staged in various rooms throughout the Student Center. Times and rooms will be posted at the entrances to the building. The Gorilla Crossing in the Student Center will also feature international food choices each day during the week.
The highlight of the week will be a performance by international rock star Salman Ahmad at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17, in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom of the student center. Ahmad's concert is free and open to the public.
