David Hurley

About David R. Hurley

David Ross Hurley, Professor of Music, earned his degrees from the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago. He teaches a broad range of Music History courses at Pittsburg State, as well as Forms and Analysis, Music Appreciation, and Oboe. Before coming to Chicago he taught courses at the University of Chicago and Roosevelt University.

Dr. Hurley’s research has focused primarily on eighteenth-century music. His book Handel’s Muse: Patterns of Creation in his Oratorios and Musical Dramas, 1743-1751 was published by Oxford University Press. His articles and reviews have appeared in such publications as The Cambridge Companion to Handel, the Cambridge Opera Journal, The Musical Quarterly, Music and Letters, The Cambridge Handel Encyclopedia, and the Journal of the American Musicological Society, among others.

David has read papers and delivered lectures at many scholarly conferences, including meetings of the American Musicological Society in New York and the Handel Institute in London. A former president of the American Handel Society, he has been featured as keynote speaker for that organization.

His oboe instructors have included Elaine Douvas, then principal oboist of the Atlanta Symphony, Daniel Stolper at Interlochen Arts Academy, Arno Mariotti at the University of Michigan, Robert Sorton, former assistant principal of the Detroit Symphony, and Robert Morgan of Chicago Lyric Opera. He has also performed in master classes with John Mack, former principal oboist of the Cleveland Orchestra. Dr. Hurley continues to perform in chamber groups and other ensembles on campus and in the surrounding region.
