What is this course?

Jumpstart English Online at Pittsburg State University is a four-week online introductory short course designed to introduce international participants to academic English. This short course will be taught at an intermediate level by qualified university IEP instructors. Participants will engage in virtual learning from their home country.

What will I learn?

In addition to improving English language skills, this short course will provide a jumpstart into the Intensive English Program and a path to studying at Pittsburg State University. Participants will gain an understanding of the higher education system in the USA, a glimpse of American culture, and a preview of the Intensive English Program. This course is an introduction to academic English preparation, and it will expand the participant's knowledge in the areas of vocabulary, reading, listening, speaking, grammar, and writing in a university academic setting.

When will the course begin?

This four-week online course will begin on October 26 and end on November 20, 2020. Participants must be able to meet online at the scheduled class times and devote at least six hours per week.

How will the course be taught?

This course will offer a mix of online synchronous lessons (at a set time, live in real-time) and asynchronous lessons (on your own time, pre-recorded lessons). Courses will be delivered through Canvas and Zoom.

What about the time difference?

We will do our best to accommodate the schedule of everyone who joins. We will have synchronous class about three times a week. Sometimes that will be as a group, sometimes we may divide into pairs or small groups depending on time zones around the world, and sometimes it will be one-on-one with the instructors.

We will not know what the exact schedule will be until we have the final class list, but again, we will make every effort to accommodate each and every student.

How much does it cost?

There is only a $60 registration fee, but the course itself is absolutely FREE! The e-book is included!

Students that successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of participation.

BONUS! For those who successfully complete the Jumpstart English Online course, participants will receive a $500 admission scholarship for the Intensive English Program at Pittsburg State University. This can be used for on-campus or online 16-week IEP courses. Participants can easily continue to advance their English language training.

What are the requirements?

Participants must have the following:

A basic knowledge of English and the ability to communicate in English at a low-intermediate level
Ability to meet online at the scheduled class times and devote at least six hours per week
Reliable computer with internet access
Webcam, microphone, and speakers

Participants must be at least 18 years old. All adult learners are welcome.

This is a non-credit course. It is not an IEP course. This course does not qualify for a visa. The purpose of this course is to prepare international students for the Intensive English Program at Pittsburg State University.

How do I register for this course?

To register for the Jumpstart English Online course, submit the online Registration Form.

Registration deadline is Wednesday, October 21, 2020. There are limited spots available for this course. Registration is not final until the $60 registration fee has been paid. The registration fee is non-refundable.

How do I pay the registration fee?

The $60 registration fee must be paid in the GUS portal with a credit card.

STEP 1: Set up your GUS login and password

Once you register online, you will receive a PSU ID number and temporary login code. Within 10 hours of receiving the code, you must set up your GUS login and password by doing the following:

1. Go to the Password Reset screen.
2. Enter your 7-digit PSU ID number (including the first zero) and submit.
3. Then click "I have a code." Enter the temporary login code you received.

STEP 2: Pay the $60 Registration Fee in the GUS portal

1. Log into the GUS Portal
2. On the left menu, click “Prospective Students”
3. Click “Application Status”
4. Click on the “Pay Now” link to pay the fee.
