Position Description

Pittsburg State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs (PVPAA). The PVPAA, the university’s chief academic officer, is a member of the President’s Council, reports directly to the President of the university, and acts as the university’s chief administrative officer in the President’s absence. The PVPAA provides visionary leadership and strong advocacy and support for the operation and development of all academic services and programs, both undergraduate and graduate. In addition, the PVPAA leads the strategic planning process for the entire campus. Reporting to this position are the deans of the four colleges, Graduate & Continuing Studies, and Library Services; the associate vice president for Enrollment Management & Student Success; the assistant vice president for Institutional Effectiveness; and the director of the Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology. The starting date is July 1, 2019.

Minimum Requirements

An earned doctorate from an accredited institution of higher education; academic credentials and record of scholarly accomplishments sufficient to merit an appointment at the rank of Professor in one of the departments of the university; demonstrated commitment to student success via both traditional and emerging learning environments, teaching excellence, and academic excellence; record of success in higher education administration, including significant experience in academic leadership at an accredited institution granting at least the baccalaureate degree; experience in communicating effectively with a variety of internal and external constituencies; respect and advocacy for diversity; willingness to work in a collective bargaining environment; experience in shared governance, strategic planning, management of personnel and budgetary resources, accreditation, accountability and assessment, including assessment of student learning, faculty evaluation, and institutional effectiveness; ability to articulate a vision that emphasizes distinguished teaching and student learning, academic innovation, scholarly activity, and university service.

Pittsburg State University is one of six universities in the Kansas Regents System. A multipurpose, state-supported institution with 320 full-time faculty and approximately 6,800 students, the university offers 166 undergraduate and 78 graduate degrees in a wide range of programs through the 27 departments in four colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and Technology. While maintaining strong research programs, Pittsburg State University’s mission is to serve primarily as a teaching institution. The university is located in Pittsburg, a community of 20,000 in southeastern Kansas approximately two hours from the Kansas City, Tulsa, and Springfield, MO, metropolitan areas.
