The awards were directed by the Student Government Association and the nomination process was open to all students.
Included in the celebration are the recipients of the long-running Dr. Robert K. Ratzlaff Outstanding Faculty Award, and recognition of years of service for Pittsburg State University employees reaching milestones.
Recipients also were recognized at a dinner with President Thomas Newsom and received commemorative medallions.
Students described Alexander Beach as a dependable leader who brings care and compassion to his role, especially with his work in campus recycling.
“He navigated the SEK Recycling closure exceptionally well. He cares for his employees, takes the extra step each day to check in, and is an example leader to a group of young men,” a student wrote in a nomination.
Students highlighted his commitment to a role that is overlooked, noting his attention to detail and daily commitment.
Beach also was recognized for the relationships he builds with student employees and the support he offers beyond the job.
“He has provided friendship and camaraderie and is understanding of college struggles, as he is a relatively recent graduate,” a student wrote. “He supports me in my extracurricular activities and overall is a resource to lean on when times begin to get tough.”

Administrative Specialist Sammye Opela was described by students as a welcoming and supportive presence who is dedicated to helping students and faculty navigate through difficulties.
“Mrs. Opela stands out because of her kindness, organization, and dedication to helping students and faculty,” a student wrote in a nomination. “She is always willing to answer questions and guide me when I need help with administrative processes.”
Students mentioned the way she goes above and beyond to create a positive and comfortable environment, especially for new members of the department.
“When I first arrived as a graduate teaching assistant, she took the time to walk with me around the building, showed me my office, and welcomed me to the department,” a student wrote.
Her continued support has helped students feel more confident, comfortable, and connected.
“As an international student, she is always willing to give me extra help if I need it. Her support helps me feel more confident and connected to the department,” a student wrote.
Students said her presence contributes to a positive atmosphere across the department.
“She treats everyone with respect and kindness,” a student wrote.

Sydney Anselmi, program coordinator who oversees Fraternity and Sorority Life, was described by students as a leader who not only is accountable but provides consistent support and makes a lasting impact on student organizations.
“Sydney is someone who will be there for you whether you are celebrating your biggest win or struggling through some of your toughest days,” a student wrote. “She cares about students’ growth, well-being, and success in a way that feels personal and genuine.”
Students said her leadership has helped strengthen the Greek community and contributed to national recognition.
Anselmi also was recognized for the way she supports students during difficult moments, providing guidance and care.
“She shows up consistently. She attends events, answers late emails, and makes herself available when students need direction or reassurance,” a student wrote.
Her mentorship has shaped students both personally and professionally.
“She has not only helped shape me as a student leader, but also as a person,” a student wrote. “Her mentorship has challenged me, strengthened me, and prepared me for life beyond college.”
