Pittsburg State University formally marked a new chapter in its history this week with the investiture — a formal ceremony — of Dr. Thomas Newsom as the institution’s 11th president.

Investiture Newsom

The ceremony was held at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts and brought together faculty, staff, students, alumni, community leaders, and guests to celebrate the occasion.

Greetings were offered by Provost Susan Bon, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, Student Government Association President Corey Humble, Staff Senate President Eva Sager, Foundation President Kathleen Flannery, and Alumni Association President Angela Meyer.

Each speaker reflected on the university’s mission, momentum, and shared words of welcome and support as Newsom formally assumed a role he began in September.

Kansas Board of Regents Chair Blake Benson delivered the charge to the president, emphasizing leadership, stewardship, and service, and presented Newsom with the official Presidential Medallion.

Music from university performers added a ceremonial and celebratory tone throughout the program.

Flowers were presented to Newsom’s wife, Victoria, and his mother, Carol. Both of his parents and his daughter were in attendance.

Newsom concluded the event with his investiture address, sharing his vision for the university and reaffirming his commitment to student success, academic excellence, the campus, and the community.
