ROTC cadets plan annual Sept. 11 observance

Starting at 8 a.m. on Sept. 11, Pittsburg State University ROTC will conduct the annual Patriot Day Remembrance at the northwest corner of Carnie Smith Stadium on Joplin Street.

Cadets welcome the campus and community to be present and if desired, to participate.

    • Cadets will fire the ROTC cannon six times:

      • 8:46 a.m. (Flight 11 crashes into the North Tower)
      • 9:03 a.m. (Flight 175 crashes into the South Tower)
      • 9:37 am (Flight 77 impacts the Pentagon)
      • 9:59 a.m. (South Tower collapses)
      • 10:03 a.m (Flight 93 crashes in Pennsylvania field)
      • 10:28 a.m. (North Tower collapses)
      •

Cadets will take turns reading each of the 2,987 names of those who died as a result of the attacks and for each name, cadets will do a pushup.

Organizer Cadet Darion Yager said anyone in attendance is invited to do a few pushups to contribute to the effort. Or, they may watch and reflect for as long as they desire.

“The event is open to everyone: first responders, students, university employees, families, and community members,” he said.

The event will conclude around 11 a.m., or when the last name is read.
