Students once again plan 5K in honor of influential professor

Students and alumni are again planning a 5K and fun run that honors the memory of a longtime educator at Pittsburg State. Registration is open now through Sept. 5.

The “Go Forth & Conquer ALS 5K and Fun Run” is planned for Sept. 6. Check-in will begin at 7:20 a.m., with the 5K beginning at 8 a.m. and the fun run/walk beginning at 8:10 a.m. The event will begin at Cleveland Plaza at the west end of the Overman Student Center.

The cost is $30 for the 5K and $20 for the fun run. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female runners and to the top three finishers in four age categories. Participants must register by Aug. 25 to ensure a t-shirt.

The event, now in its fourth year, pays tribute to Professor Craig Fuchs, who directed the Honors College and taught music for many years. He wrapped up each meeting and event with words of motivation for his students: “Go forth and conquer.”  It made a difference, they said.

On Feb. 23, 2022, Fuchs was diagnosed with ALS. That fall, students from the Honors College Association hosted the inaugural "Go Forth & Conquer" 5K and Fun Run to benefit the ALS Association. It continued in 2023 and 2024. Fuchs passed away on June 8, 2024.
