Mathematics and culture intersect in new art exhibit at Pitt State

The Pittsburg State University Art Department will host an exhibit by Daniel Opoku called "Identimatics: Mathematical Grammar of Kente Patterns," from March 27 to May 10 in the University Gallery in Porter Hall, 202 E. Cleveland.

Opoku’s inspiration for this exhibit stems from an “attempt to blur the boundaries between mathematics and culture,” as well as affirming the global language of mathematics by combining them with Ghanian Kente patterns to establish “difference of visualizing meaning.”

The exhibit features paintings of these combinations to showcase and explain how “all cultural mathematical projections should contribute, and at times intersect, equitably.”

The opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on March 27 in the University Gallery and will include remarks from the artist.

This reception is free, and no ticket is required.
