Students plan cornhole tournament for campus and community as fundraiser to give back

Students who represent their campus as members of Student Government Association are striving to form a greater relationship between the community of Pittsburg and the students of Pitt State by organizing a new event: a cornhole tournament open to competitors of all ages.

The tournament is planned from 3 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 15 on the lawn of Russ Hall — the first building on campus and one that was made possible through the support of the community, who helped lobby the Legislature for funding.

The proceeds raised will go back to the community in three ways, says Corey Humble, a Biology major who serves as the association’s director of community engagement.

A portion will go toward funding the Big Event, a community service initiative that SGA has been organizing each spring for 20 years.

A portion also will go to the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas, a non-profit that since 2001 has served the region with charitable giving.

And lastly, a portion will be awarded as prizes to winners of the bracket.

"The tournament will be geared to all individuals in those communities, from kids who deem themselves cornhole gods, to grandparents who have been playing since who knows when,” Humble said.

The tournament also will feature live music by a band comprised of Pitt State students, food trucks, and fun.

We hope people come to enjoy the PSU atmosphere, but also hope they understand they are donating to two great causes,” he said.

Registration is $5 per student and $10 per community member. To receive a registration link, email SGA.
