The annual meeting of Kansas Paraguay Partners will be held on the campus of Pittsburg State University on Saturday, April 15, 2023. The meeting will include a musical performance by Paraguayan PSU alumni Dr. Ramiro Miranda, violin, and Daniel Ayala, piano. Keynote speaker will be the Deputy Chief of Mission, Counselor Oscar Báez, Embassy of Paraguay in the USA. 

The meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Sunflower Room, in the Overman Student Center, and will conclude at 2:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Registration is required and includes a light breakfast and lunch. Register by April 7. Registration is $27 for members and guests, and $7 for students: Online Registration

The president of Kansas Paraguay Partners is Paraguayan PSU alumna Sonia Cox. 

Paraguay and the State of Kansas have had an official partnership led by Kansas Paraguay Partners (KPP) and the Comité Paraguay-Kansas for fifty-three years. KPP also collaborates frequently with higher education institutions in the state. Through this partnership, thousands of Paraguayan students have attended Kansas universities, while many Kansas faculty and students have researched and/or studied abroad in Paraguay

Daniel Ayala
Studied classical piano with Dr. Reena Natenberg at Pittsburg State University and jazz/contemporary piano and improvisation with Dr. Whitney Ashe at Western Illinois University. He has played alongside important figures of jazz such as Village Vanguard Orchestra, Michael Weiss, Aaron Kipola, Don Norton, Dan Miller and Alan Baylock among others. He has played piano in musicals such as “Working”, “The Drowsey Chaperone” and “Pippin”. Native of Paraguay, his music includes an array of styles that combine jazz with traditional paraguayan music, heavily based in improvisation, he is active in the paraguayan music scene with his quartet playing classic and modern standards rooted in the bebop, post-bop, modal jazz, Latin jazz and swing tradition as well as original compositions. His music is heavily influenced by artists like Kenny Barron, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, Cedar Walton, Keith Emerson and others. In 2021, he recorded his first album as a pianist and composer with his quintet (piano, guitar, alto sax, bass and drums) called “Sugestión” available in all music platforms, in which he explores various styles and ensemble configurations, with compositions and arrangements based in the bebop language, modal jazz, Latin and avant-garde.
    
Ramiro Miranda
Ramiro enjoys an active career as orchestral conductor, violinist and educator. As associate professor at Emporia State University, he teaches upper strings and conducts the Emporia Symphony Orchestra and the ESU Chamber Orchestra, and he guest conducts academic and professional orchestras in the U.S. and Latin America. As a violinist and chamber musician, Miranda has given solo recitals in the United States, Latin America, and China. I addition to performing the standard solo and chamber music repertoires, he enjoys improvisatory genres, and is a member of the Switchgrass String Quartet, an ensemble specialized in improvisatory music. He has also performed in ensembles supporting Eugene Friesen, Chris Howes, Jason Anick, Howard Levy, Glenn Velez, Mike Marshall, and Darol Anger. Recently, he has shared the stage performing duos with guitar legend Berta Rojas.

A native of Asunción, Paraguay, Miranda came to the United States to pursue a Bachelor's degree in violin performance at Pittsburg State University. Miranda also holds Master's degrees from Illinois State University in violin performance and orchestral conducting, and a Doctoral in Musical Arts in orchestral conducting from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He is the recipient of many awards and honors, including a grant from the Koch Cultural Trust to attend the prestigious European American Musical Alliance’s Nadia Boulanger Institute at the historic Schola Cantorum in Paris. In this month-long intensive course, Miranda studied counterpoint, harmony, musicianship, conducting, and musical analysis with highly acclaimed pedagogues following the musical lineage of Nadia Boulanger. He continues to pursue studies in counterpoint and composition.
