Dr. Bienvenido S. Cortes is Associate Dean for the Kelce Graduate School of Business, Research and Assessment and University Professor of Economics at Pittsburg State University (PSU). Dr. Cortes received his B.S. in business economics from the University of the Philippines in 1977, M.A. in economics from Wichita State University in 1980, and Ph.D. in economics from Oklahoma State University in 1987.

Dr. Cortes joined the PSU economics department in 1986. In 2001-2, he was a Fulbright scholar at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan where he taught regional economics, macroeconomics, and U.S. economic policies. He was also a visiting professor at Japan’s Hiroshima University of Economics in 1993-94. He has taught short intensive courses in Paraguay (2008, Universidad Catolica) and in Taiwan (2009, Chung Yuan Christian University).

In June 2012, Dr. Cortes served as a faculty consultant for the USAID Iraq Financial Development Project; he gave a five-day faculty workshop on “Current Developments in International Finance” at Al-Mansour University College in Baghdad. He has participated in overseas faculty seminars focusing on economic growth and international business practices in the European Union, Hong Kong, and southern China.

Dr. Cortes teaches introductory economics, industrial organization, international economics, and the economics capstone course as well as MBA courses. He regularly presents papers at regional and international economics conferences and has numerous peer-reviewed articles on the Kansas economy, the Japanese and Chinese economies, U.S. economic policy, and economic education. His papers have appeared in scholarly journals such as The Journal of Economics, International Review of Applied Economics, The International Journal of Economic Policy Studies, Journal of Economics and Economic Education Research, and the National Social Science Journal. He is a member of various professional economic associations including the East Asian Economics Association, Japan Economic Policy Association, and the Missouri Valley Economics Association.
