How can the Writing Center help?

Good writers go to the Writing Center

About the Writing Center

The Writing Center, in Grubbs Hall 114, (620) 235-4694, is open daily from about 9 until midafternoon. Hours of operation vary from semester to semester. To check on current hours, call the English Department office, (620) 235-4689, or email engl@pittstate.edu. Click here to find the Writing Center Home Page.

The center is staffed by student tutors who work with undergraduate and graduate students from every discipline and with international students.

The center is free and functions on a first-come-first-served basis. You do not need an appointment. (No "drop-offs" are accepted.)

For more information about the Writing Center, go to the Writing Center's website, or you can access the websites of other writing centers: University of Wisconsin -- Madison, Colorado State University, Rensselaer University.

How Tutors Help You Improve Your Writing

Tutors work with students on both sentence-level and whole essay issues. The center has a "hands off" policy, meaning that tutors talk to students about possible revisions and about matters of grammar and usage, but the students decide which changes to make.

Come in if you want help

  • Coming up with an idea
  • Constructing a thesis
  • Developing ideas
  • Giving and interpreting evidence
  • Learning MLA or APA citation format
  • Organizing the essay
  • Constructing paragraphs
  • Creating introductions and conclusions
  • Constructing varied sentences
  • Using correct grammar
  • Spelling correctly
  • Dealing with second-language problems
  • Understanding how to avoid plagiarism

Teacher Involvement

If you want your teacher to know that you have gone to the Writing Center and to see what you have worked on, you can ask the tutor to send notification.

Some teachers send a copy of their major writing assignments to the Writing Center, but it is best if you bring your own copy of the assignment just in case. The tutor will help you understand the assignment requirements.
