Do I need to take a WL course? English 101? English 299?
Do I need to take
If you are a PSU student, you are required to take two Writing to Learn courses
in order to graduate. This is true even if you transferred to PSU from a
different institution and even if you have completed English 101 and English
299, or their equivalents.
The only exception to this rule is for students transferring to PSU with 55
credit hours or more. Then the WL requirement is waived automatically.
If you transferred to PSU with almost 55 credit hours and with your General
Education courses completed, discuss with your advisor the possibility of
requesting a waiver.
If you have other reasons to believe that the WL requirement should be waived
for you, discuss your reasons with your advisor.
Most PSU students take English 101, English Composition. This course plus two
WL courses are prerequisites for English 299. Click here for a description of
English 101.
The Writing to Learn Series of Courses consists of four courses taken
consecutively in the first two years of your college career:
English 101
(English Comp)
®
1st
WL
®
2nd
WL
®
English 299
(Intro to Research
Writing)
If you have taken English 101 or its equivalent as a high school student or
from another institution, you should take your first Writing to Learn course to
begin the series.
If
your ACT score in the English portion of the ACT was 27, you are exempted
from English 101. You earn three credits with an A grade for the course once
you complete the first WL course with a C or better. To earn the free credits,
have your advisor sign you up for the phantom course English 101-40 at the same
time as you take your first WL course.
See below if your ACT score in
English was 28
or higher.
Most students at PSU take English 299, Introduction to Research Writing, or its
equivalent at another institution. It is part of the
Writing to Learn Series of Courses.
Click here for a description of
English 299.
If your ACT score in the English portion of the ACT was 28 or higher, you are
exempted from both English 101 and English 299. Instead you
will take
English 190, Honors English Composition. In this case, the Writing
to Learn Series of Courses would look like this:
English 101-40
®
1st
WL
®
English 190
(Honors English Comp)
®
2nd
WL
You will earn three credits with an A grade for English 101 once you complete
the first WL course with a C or better. To earn the free credits, have your
advisor sign you up for the phantom course English 101-40 at the same time as
you take your first WL course.
