How do I find sources?
Example of how to find sources
To find printed material on your subject, the first step is to make sure that
you know what you are looking for. Searches depend on your ability to find key
terms to describe your subject from different angles.
For instance, if your subject is "dog bites," some key terms would be
-
dogs
-
animals
-
dog training
-
animal attacks
-
dog attacks
If you know the breeds of dogs that sometimes attack humans, like
that would give you more terms.
Some indexes have lists of terms to help you find the subject in that index
Once you find a few sources, see what the subject headings are in the database
for additional terms.
The article or book itself will also give you ideas for searching in the
content and in the bibliography. This is called
footnote chasing.
