What resources are there to help me teach this class?
There are many resources you can use to help you deal with issues that arise in your WL course.
-
The first resource for teaching your WL class is the
WL Faculty Workshop
-
For more continuing help, use this web page, with its links to
assignment ideas by PSU faculty
(as well as links off-campus) and suggestions about
how to respond to writing assignments
and how to deal with other classroom issues that might arise.
-
In addition to this virtual library, you have access to a paper library of books and journal articles in various disciplines in the
WAC Center (310 Grubbs Hall).
You can borrow materials by signing a check-out sheet posted there.
-
Always you can talk to the
WAC coordinator
and assistant.
-
Talking to other
WL faculty
in your discipline would probably give you the most immediate help on
day-to-day questions.
-
Twice a year the
WAC Newsletter
comes out, with articles on ways to use writing in the classroom.
For most issues, a WL faculty member writes an article on a particular kind
of assignment that he or she has used productively in a WL class.
The newsletter also includes information about the program in general.
-
Each semester, there is a
general meeting of WL faculty
at which ideas for classes are discussed.
-
In addition, each spring a Conversations About Writing luncheon is offered.
Typically a faculty member makes a short presentation on a writing assignment
he or she gives and the group takes off from there -- after eating an
excellent meal.
-
When possible the WAC coordinator takes interested WL faculty to the
National WAC Conference in the spring for a wider view of writing in the
university. Look for conferences in your own discipline that include
sessions on writing.
-
Finally, watch for
focused
workshops
presented by the WAC program on such topics as helping students revise their work,
how to write good writing assignments, how to use journals and small groups, and
how to respond to student writing.
