Writing to Learn Requirements

All PSU students take two WL courses in order to graduate. These courses are pre-requisites for English 299. The only exception to the rule is transfer students who come to PSU with 55 credit hours or more. For these students the WL requirement is automatically waived. For more specific information on which courses are available, go to the current WL course list. For more information on transfer students and on waivers, follow these links. Click here for a description of the WL courses.

The Writing to Learn courses are part of the WL series of courses. Most students follow this progression:

English 101 (English Comp) ® 1st WL ® 2nd WL ® English 299 (Intro to Research Writing)

Students with an ACT of 27 in the English portion of the exam follow this progression:

English 101-40 ® 1st WL ® 2nd WL ® English 299 (Intro to Research Writing)

Students with ACT of 28 or higher in the English portion of the exam follow this progression:

English 101-40 ® 1st WL ® English 190 (Honors English Comp) ® 2nd WL

Students who enter PSU with English 101 or English 299 completed, still take two WL courses.
