How do I avoid plagiarism?
Plagiarism is the use of other people's ideas, data, sentence structures, or
vocabulary without proper acknowledgment. It can be outright, like handing in
someone else's paper as one's own, or it can be a result of ignorance about the
rules for paraphrasing others' work. Duke University has put together some
excellent pages on the issue. Follow the link below to find out exactly what
plagiarism consists of and how to avoid it.
It is important to know what the
Consequences of Plagiarism
are at PSU and in individual
departments. The overall description of what constitutes plagiarism at PSU and
the allowable consequences are given in the Code of Student Rights and
Responsibilities (Article 30), printed each semester at the back of the
Schedule of Classes. Some academic departments have specific rules on
plagiarism in addition to this overall plan. If you are uncertain what
constitutes plagiarism in your discipline, contact your department chair.
