How can I become a WL Faculty Member?
To become a Writing to Learn faculty member, follow these three steps:
To have the chance to teach a Writing to Learn class,
your first step is to talk about it with your chair.
WL courses are limited to the freshman and sophomore level
(100 and 200 level courses), with just a few exceptions.
And the course enrollment is capped at 25. Your chair can
tell you if any courses in the department could meet these two criteria.
(Many upper-level courses are small enough, but the WAC program presumes
that writing is occurring at that level. The WL courses are meant to get
writing into courses that students take during the first two years they are here.)
Once a course in your department is identified as a potential WL class,
and your chair agrees that you can teach it, you should let the WAC Coordinator
(or Assistant Coordinator) know that you are interested. Contact Don Judd
(the WAC Coordinator) at
djudd@pittstate.edu or at extension 4697; or contact Kathy De Grave
(Assistant Coordinator) at
kdegrave@pittstate.edu or at extension 4705. The coordinator or assistant coordinator
will set up a date for you to take the Writing to Learn Faculty Workshop, or
if you have questions about the program will discuss these with you.
Each semester and in the summer the WAC coordinators run a Writing to Learn
Faculty Workshop for those who will be teaching a WL course in the following
semester (sometimes the workshop has to occur at the beginning of a semester,
if the faculty member is not on campus or has not been hired until then).
The workshop consists of two meetings, of about two hours each.
Typically four new WL faculty attend these workshops each semester.
The workshop times and dates are arranged to meet the needs of the participants.
For more detail about the workshop, see
What is the WL Workshop.
