General Questions

Who has to take a WL course?

All PSU students take two Writing to Learn courses. Some students test out of English 101 or English 299, but the two WL courses are still required. These courses ask students to think about a discipline in depth and to articulate their ideas according to the expectations of that discipline. This is an experience all college students need, especially at the lower undergraduate level. Therefore students do not test out of this requirement. See below for how transfer students are affected by the WL requirement.

What is the WL Series of Courses?

The WL Series of Courses consists of four courses, ideally taken in succession in the first two years of the student's college career.

English 101 (Composition) ® 1st WL ® 2nd WL ® English 299 (Intro to Research Writing)

If students follow this series, they will gain progressive experience in academic writing. Therefore, it is best if students take one course each semester, in the above order, for the their first four semesters. In certain unusual cases, students will opt to take more than one of these writing courses in a given semester, but normally you should advise against it. The purpose of the series is to allow students to practice and develop their writing skills over time. Also, given the amount of writing required in each of the four courses, two courses at once would overload most students.

Some students have already completed English 101. These students should enter the series of courses at the 1st WL course. Other students have completed both English 101 and English 299. These students still need to take the two WL courses.

If a student receives a 27 for the English section of the ACT, that student immediately takes the first WL course. If a student receives a 28 or higher for the English section of the ACT, that student takes English 190 instead of English 101 and English 299. See the section on testing out of composition courses.

When should students take a WL course?

Your advisees should take a WL course as soon as they have completed English 101, the basic composition course. English 101 and two WL courses are pre-requisites for English 299, the second composition course. Ideally, the four courses of the WL Series of Courses should be taken in four consecutive semesters, beginning with the first semester of the freshman year and ending with the second semester of the sophomore year. See the flow chart.

Do the WL classes count as General Ed?

If your advisee takes a WL course to fulfill a General Education requirement, he or she gets two for one -- the single course fulfills both requirements at once. This is likewise true if your advisee takes a WL course that counts for the major or minor, or as a free elective. To keep the number of credits down, it is best to advise your students to take WL courses that fulfill other requirements at the same time.

What is the advisor printout?

Each semester, just before pre-enrollment, each faculty member who advises students who need to take a course in the WL Series of Courses, receives a printout that shows where each of these students is in the series. If the printout has just one or two names, then most of your advisees have already completed the series.

The printout gives your advisees' names, ID numbers, a record of which of the courses in the series the student "needs," and which ones are "done." Certain courses will not apply for your student (such as the honors course, English 190 for most students). These courses are marked "N/A" for "not applicable."

If the printout seems to be incorrect, contact the WAC coordinator, Don Judd at djudd@pittstate.edu.
