How can the library help?
| Axe Library is an outstanding resource for helping you show students
how to do research, if that is part of your Writing to Learn course assignments.
Students in WL courses have not had much experience doing college-level research,
because they take the WL classes before English 299, the research writing course.
Therefore, if you want your students to use outside sources in their
research
papers, you will have to teach them how to find those sources,
extract evidence without plagiarizing, use evidence in an objective way,
and cite the sources correctly. A good place to start in this conversation
is to have your students make use of information on the internet. On its
webpage, the library has compiled lists of data bases for students to find
outside sources and has made direct links to internet sites that discuss the
other issues students have to be aware of as they write a research paper.
The WAC website has linked into the appropriate Axe Library pages to help
make this learning experience easier. Have your students go to the
subsection "About Research Problems" on the
Questions Students Frequently Ask
webpage, for a series of links on specific research questions.
Most of these discussions have direct links to library sources.
You might like to review these sections yourself to see what students will find.
