How are WL courses assessed?

pencil
At PSU, WL courses are assessed each semester by a set of voluntary-feedback forms. WL faculty who wish to assess how well their WL course worked have their students fill out a Student Feedback form (devised by the WAC committee, used in common by WL faculty) which asks such questions as "how much did the writing assignments help you learn course content?" with a scale from 1-5 and room for comment. There are seven questions of this sort. Once the teacher collects the student forms (at the end of the semester), the teacher reads the responses -- thereby getting personal feedback for his or her course -- and fills out a Faculty Summary and Response form. This form asks questions in line with the student form, such as "Did your students appear to think that the writing assignments helped them learn course content?" and "What do you think about how well the assignments worked?" In this way, the teacher summarizes the student response and gives a thoughtful reaction to it. One of the questions on the summary and response form (which has nine questions) asks whether the teacher will make any changes in the course based on the student comments. This single form is sent to the WAC coordinator and the faculty member is compensated for his or her work. The form itself is anonymous, although the course type can be indicated. After all the summary and response forms for a given semester are in, the WAC committee looks at them to assess the program as a whole, using in particular suggestions WL faculty make on their summaries for program reform.
