Provost Lynette Olson has announced the selection of Dr. Karl R. Kunkel as the next dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Kunkel, currently the Department Head of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology at Missouri State University, was selected following an intensive national search. Kunkel's appointment is effective with the beginning of the fiscal year in June.
"Dr. Kunkel rose to the top of an incredibly talented group of finalists," said Olson. "He brings a wealth of experience to the university, both as an educator and an administrator. I'm happy that he has accepted the opportunity and challenge of leading the College of Arts and Sciences."
"I'm very pleased and honored to be the next dean of the College of Arts and Sciences," said Kunkel. "PSU has a long history of providing an excellent education for its students and I'm excited to be a part of continuing that trend into the future."
Olson said she was very thankful to Dr. Howard Smith and the search committee he led for their hard work and their dedication to this important task.
"Their hard work and dedication made this a very successful search," Olson said.
Kunkel received his bachelor's degree, master's degree and Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Kunkel began his educational career as an assistant professor of sociology at Morehead State University in 1989. In 1994, he accepted a position as assistant professor of sociology at Missouri State University, formerly known as Southwest Missouri State University. He has been a member of the SMS faculty since that time and has been in many roles including criminology program coordinator and director of graduate studies and professor of sociology and criminology. In 2003 he was named department head of sociology, anthropology and criminology.
