Programs leading to the Master of Science degree with a major in Special Education Teaching will result in special education endorsement K-6, 6-12 at both the adaptive and functional levels. Prerequisites for admission to the program require a valid teaching certificate at the level of instruction, a grade point average of 3.0 in the undergraduate major, and passage of the PLT and Praxis in major area of teaching.
Students desiring to major in Special Education on the Master's degree level may choose between Option I and Option II as described in the current University catalog. To determine which of the two plans to follow, the student should confer with his/her advisor.
Since the requirements for state certification in Special Education may be partially met on the undergraduate level, close attention must be given to the selection of graduate courses leading to the master's degree with a major in Special Education. For specific requirements, refer to the various endorsement descriptions linked at the top of this page.
Procedural steps for Master's Degree and/or Licensure:
- The student must apply for and be admitted to a degree program through the Office of Graduate Studies.
- The student must submit work samples addressing four of the Kansas State Department of Education Special Education Standards and complete one practicum prior to enrollment in his/her 18th hour of coursework.
- The student must apply for candidacy in conference with the advisor.
- The student must petition the Graduate Office to graduate.
- The student must register for the Comprehensive Exam in the office of the SSLS Department. This exam is administered to each Option II candidate during his/her final enrollment. Work samples addressing the remaining four KSDE standards must be submitted
