Commencement
Pittsburg State University will hold its 10th winter commencement at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16, in the Weede Physical Education Building. Nearly 500 graduates are expected to participate.
Commencement activities begin at 10 a.m. with the U.S. Army ROTC Commissioning Ceremony in the Balkans Room of the Overman Student Center. At 5 p.m. the PSU Alumni Association will host a reception in the Heritage Room of the student center for the three Meritorious Achievement Achievement Award Winners who will be honored at commencement. From 6-7:15 p.m., PSU President Tom Bryant will host a reception on the Mezzanine of John Lance Arena in the Weede Physical Education Building for students and their families. The commencement procession will begin at 7:15 p.m.
Participation in winter commencement has been growing steadily, according to Lee Christensen, associate vice president for academic programs. Christensen said that prior to the institution of a winter commencement ceremony, students who graduated mid-year had to wait until May to participate in commencement. Consequently, he said, many did not.
“Both the students and their families were deprived of that very important commencement ritual,” Christensen said. “The high rate of participation in the December commencement demonstrates how important this is to students and their families and friends.”
