The Age of Technology
PSU meeting the demands of a new Technology Age
A century ago, students at what is now Pittsburg State University who were interested in careers in technology likely would have taken classes in drawing, machine construction or perhaps forging. It was clearly a simpler time.
Today, students in PSU's College of Technology still learn the basics of machine design and construction or the principles of metalcasting, but that is just the beginning. Depending upon their area of emphasis, the technology students of today may be learning about elastomeric materials, thermoset resins, computer aided manufacturing, advanced logic design or the theory of structures. The rich curriculum available to students in the College of Technology is just one example of how Pittsburg State University has changed aggressively to meet the demands of the Age of Technology.
A key milepost in the growth and development of the university's College of Technology was the completion of the 278,000-square-foot Kansas Technology Center in 1997. The $28-million building brought all of the university's technology programs together into a single space that was designed to meet the increasingly rapid change in technology. With the help of numerous corporate partners, the College of Technology has installed approximately $16 million worth of equipment so students may have the most up-to-date technological instruction possible.
The strong relationship between the PSU College of Technology and industry extends well beyond equipment for modern laboratories. Firms with names as recognizable as Toyota, Caterpillar and Cessna provide rich summer internship opportunities for students and often permanent employment following graduation.
The change in PSU's College of Technology over the past century has been dramatic, but it is likely just the beginning. The Age of Technology is rapidly reshaping the world and Pittsburg State University's College of Technology is working hard to put PSU's graduates in position to lead that change.
