Sororities, fraternities welcome new pledges
Sororities and fraternities have always been an important facet of the campus life at Pittsburg State University. For many students, the friends they make when they pledge last a life time.
As another academic year gets underway at Pittsburg State University, the Greek houses are going through their informal and formal recruitment activities. The Greek leaders say they are excited to welcome the many new faces into Greek life.
Daniel Chavez, president of the Sigma Chi fraternity, said he tells prospective pledges that joining the fraternity is “an amazing experience.” Chavez, a senior from Topeka, Kan., said that Greek life is partly about friends and relationships.
“When I walked into the fraternity,” Chavez said, “I didn’t know anyone. Now I have friends all over campus.”
But, Chavez said, Greek life is also a learning experience.
“Joining a fraternity can prepare you for life,” Chavez said. “You learn how to communicate with people, learn how to motivate other and develop your leadership skills. And the best thing is you do all this with your best friends.”
Amanda Larson, a senior from Lenexa, Kan., is a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She also serves as the president of the Panhellenic Council, the governing body for the campus sororities.
“I think that living in the (sorority) house is one of the greatest experiences you can have,” Larson said.
Kelly Cummings, a senior from Olathe who is also a Panhellenic Recruitment co-chairperson and a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority agreed. “Everyone is so different,” she said. “It is good to learn to get along with so many different personalities.”
In addition to the social, leadership and personal growth aspects of Greek life, the chapter leaders point to an emphasis on scholarship and philanthropic activities as advantages for potential recruits to consider.
