A student in the annual Cutting Edge Auxiliaries Camp for high school drum lines, flag squads and band leaders works on a new routine at PSU. More than 500 students from high schools in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma participated in this year’s camp.
PSU camps fill summer days
Summer has no lazy days, at least not at Pittsburg State University.
In addition to the regular summer academic classes, the PSU campus plays host to a wide variety of camps for high school and grade school students. Athletic camps include basketball, football, softball, track and field, and volleyball. The popular Cutting Edge Auxiliaries Camp is designed for high school drum lines and flag squads. The camp also provides instruction for drum majors and other high school band leaders. At the Kansas Technology Center, youngsters catch the technology bug in the very popular Adventures in Robotics camp, which takes place at the end of July.
PSU President Tom Bryant said hosting the summer activities for youngsters are an important part of the university’s mission.
“University facilities during the regular academic year are usually fully booked,” Bryant said, “but during the summer, that is not the case. It makes a lot of sense to be able to use these excellent facilities to serve youngsters, many of whom may soon become PSU students.”
Bryant said that education and service are both part of the university’s mission and the summer camps are part of that. The opportunity to recruit students to PSU is also a plus.
“Bringing the best and brightest students to PSU is a process that often begins early,” Bryant said. “Many PSU freshmen can trace their first exposure to Pittsburg State to a Saturday music competition, a science fair or a summer camp. Lots of youngsters learn to love PSU long before they enroll here.”
