Well-kept campus proves to be a valuable asset
According to Larry Miller, PSU’s grounds and maintenance supervisor, it took more than 5,000 tulip bulbs to brighten the flower beds on campus this spring. Melinda Roelfs, director of admission, says the efforts pay off.
“The way the campus looks when prospective students and their families visit campus is extremely important,” Roelfs said. “That’s especially true when we know they’ve visited or will visit other campuses and with compare.”
The look of the campus includes not only neatly trimmed lawns and bright flower beds, but clean and well-maintained buildings and structures.
“People look at the campus and make assumptions about what goes on here based upon how the place looks,” Roelfs said. “We have a lot of pride in Pittsburg State University and that is reflected in the way the campus looks.”
Miller said keeping the grounds looking good got a little more challenging with last winter’s ice storm. More than 16 trees were lost and many more were damaged. Miller said a $5,000 appropriation from the SGA will help the grounds and maintenance crews begin to replace the campus shade trees that were lost.
Next up for his crews, Miller said, will be filling the many campus flower beds with summer annuals.
