Career Services helps students land first job

Janet Clutter, a senior education major from Girard, makes a good impression during Teacher Interview Day. The event is just one of the many services that the PSU Career Services Office offers students as they pursue a job. |
After years of work and countless hours of study and preparation, the time eventually comes for every Pitt State student when the focus turns from getting the degree to entering the world of work. Most frequently, that time is in the spring as the academic year comes to a close. At PSU, the Career Services Office provides a wide range of services designed to help students land that first job.
According to David Hogard, assistant director for experiential programs in the Career Services Office, many students mistakenly think that the Career Services Office is focused only on helping graduating seniors. While the office is prepared to assist graduating seniors, Hogard said, the office has many resources that can help students as early as their freshman year. In fact, Hogard said, students should approach career preparation as an ongoing process throughout college.
Hogard said that students are often surprised by the many resources available in Career Services. Students who visit the Career Services Office have a wide variety of concerns and needs, Hogard said, and the office strives to help each student individually.
Career Services offers a variety of workshops on subjects such as resumes, interviews, career fairs, and networking. The office offers a career exploration course each semester that is designed as an overview of possible careers. It also offers career counseling, interest inventories, and reference guides for both careers and internships and hosts a number of career fairs on campus each semester. Students can even post resumes online at no charge.
Although career searches can be intimidating and frustrating for students, Hogard says students can lessen the stress and make the process easier by preparing ahead of time. Hogard encourages students to visit the Career Services Office either in person or online to become acquainted with the services offered.
