Music Department celebrates centennial
Music has been a part of Pittsburg State University’s rich history since the early years. From the first public appearance of the Normal School orchestra at an all-school assembly program in 1905 to the development of McCray Hall on the current PSU campus a few years later, the Music Department has long been fundamental to the culture of the university community and the region.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Department of Music at PSU. According to Axe Library Special Collections, the PSU Department of Music was officially recognized by the Kansas State Board of Regents as a department in September 1908.
To celebrate this milestone, the department will host a Centennial Reunion Celebration on Sunday, April 13. The events for the day include:
1-2 p.m. – Reception and open house in McCray Hall
2-3 p.m. – PSU faculty recital in the Recital Hall
3-4 p.m. – Reception and open house in McCray Hall
4-5 p.m. – Tribute to Walter McCray Concert in the Recital Hall. Portions of Handel’s “Messiah” will be performed by the Southeast Kansas Symphony Orchestra, along with the PSU choirs, and faculty and alumni solo artists. In addition, PSU Special Collections Curator Randy Roberts will present a lecture on the history of the Department of Music.
5:45-6:15 p.m. – Informal gathering at Memorial Auditorium (503 N. Pine)
6:15-7:15 p.m. – Banquet dinner at Memorial Auditorium (required tickets are available for $15 by contracting the Department of Music). Music students will perform throughout the dinner hour.
7:30-9 p.m. – Finale concert at Memorial Auditorium. The PSU Chamber Winds and Alumni Wind Ensemble will present the culminating concert.
"We wanted this celebration to honor our history with the university and community as well as feature the talented artists that have contributed to the department's success," said Craig Fuchs, department chairman.
