Montauk State Park

For the night's camping we drove away from the St. Francois Volcanic Province and deeper into the Ozark uplift. We decided upon Montauk State Park near Licking, Missouri. Montauk is located at the headwaters of the Current River (which would be the object of much of tomorrow's activities) and near part of the Mark Twain National Forest. This region is dominated by limestone and dolostone lithology and exhibits karst topography throughout many regions.

For the first group we found that the park was quite packed. For the second group there were very few occupied campsites. This seemed odd, since the first group arrived on a Thursday evening and the second group on a Sunday evening. The camp sites in both cases sat rather close to the Current River, which made for picturesque evenings, but also for a multitude of mosquitoes.
