The Program in Community Counseling is designed to train skilled practitioners to provide direct counseling services in mental health and other community agency settings. Completion of the program (and post-degree supervised experience requirements) qualifies graduates to apply for Licensure as Professional Counselors in Kansas, Missouri, and over 40 other states. Advanced students are also eligible to sit for the National Board for Certified Counselors Examination.

Some students may take additional coursework beyond 59 hours, especially in the areas of intensive special topics short courses, Orientation to College Teaching, additional assessment courses, and/or additional coursework in Family Counseling. The first level of counselor licensure in Kansas, the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), requires the degree, a passing score on the National Counseling Exam (NCE), post-degree supervised experience, and a total of at least 60 graduate hours. The second level of counselor licensure in Kansas, the Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) requires all of the elements for the LPC, post-degree supervised experience in the field, and a passing score on the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam (NCMHCE).
