Application Materials
Undergraduate Degree Programs
The following options require completion of an application process and admission to the program/degree:
- Bachelor of Science in Psychology – Substance Abuse Counseling Emphasis
- Bachelor of Science in Psychology – Case Management Emphasis
- Minor in Substance Abuse Services
- Addiction Counselor Certification ONLY
Admission to the above programs in the department requires that students submit the following:
- Department Application and Non-Refundable Application Fee of $30.00 (Payable to Department of Psychology and Counseling)
- Personal Statement of Career Goals
- Consent for Release of Criminal History Information
- Three Completed Professional Recommendation Forms (References from friends, relatives, ministers, personal physicians, and personal counselors are not acceptable. References from employers, teachers, or academic advisors are preferred.)
Application deadlines are Summer or Fall admission, March 1, and Spring admission, October 1.

Graduate Degree Programs
The Department of Psychology and Counseling offers several graduate program options:
- Master of Science Degree in Psychology (General or Clinical)
- Master of Science Degree in Counseling (Community or School Counseling)
- Educational Specialist Degree in School Psychology
- Educational Specialist Degree in Counseling
Admission to graduate study in the department is competitive and requires that students submit the following:
- Continuing and Graduate Studies Application for Admission to Graduate Study and Non-Refundable Application Fee of $35.00 for Domestic Students or $60.00 for International Students
- Department Application and Non-Refundable Application Fee of $30.00
(Payable to Department of Psychology and Counseling) - This is in addition to the Continuing and Graduate Studies application fee
- Personal Statement of Career Goals
- Consent for Release of Criminal History Information
- GRE Scores (General Test Only)-Combined score of 800 on the verbal and quantitative areas and 3.5 or above on the analytical writing area
- Three Completed Professional Recommendation Forms
- Official Degree Statement Transcript(s)
- A Minimum TOEFL Score of 550 written/213 computer/79 internet for Students whose primary language is not English
- Overall Undergraduate GPA of 3.0
All application materials must be received before applications will be considered. Incomplete application files will not be considered. It is the responsibility of the applicant to monitor file completion.
One can matriculate into the programs at three different times: Fall, Spring, or Summer. Application deadlines are: Summer or Fall Admission, March 1; and Spring Admission, October 1. Applications for M. S. in Clinical Psychology are normally accepted for Fall admission. Applications will be considered for Spring admission, but please note that this will extend the student's program of study by one semester. Normally applications that remain inactive for more than 30 days or that are incomplete after the next application deadline are considered no longer active and will be denied.
Most graduate students in the Department are at some point involved in providing direct mental health services as part of their practicum and internship experiences. As a result, the Department has a policy that requires all applicants consent to background checks with governmental and law enforcement agencies regarding the applicant's history of convictions for crimes involving violence or exploitation of others. Failure to sign the form for Consent for Release of Criminal Information History will result in the immediate denial of the application.
