Students team up for the problem-solving competition Thursday.

One of Pittsburg State University's largest College of Technology events, the 2011 Four State Regional Technology Conference, opened Thursday at the Kansas Technology Center.

The conference features workshops, demonstrations and special interest sessions on some of the newest technologies used in a wide variety of disciplines (12 different technical areas). The conference is designed to show students, educators, and industry constituents how technology is being used today. The conference also welcomes technology vendors and industry partners for two days of networking opportunities.

"Every year, this is a fantastic opportunity for learning on so many levels," said Dr. John L. Iley, chairman of Department of Technology and Workforce Learning and coordinator for the conference. "The latest technologies are shared with educators from all levels of education as well with industry constituents. The FSRTC serves as a regional clearinghouse for best practices and technology information. There is literally something for everyone."

In its 69th year, the conference theme for 2011 is "Advancing Technology Through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Innovation and Imagination." STEM is at the forefront of regional and national education initiatives. The conference will offer approximately 20 programs directly related to STEM, as well as more than 50 other programs, making it one of the oldest and largest conferences of its type in the country.

Several of the general interest programs are related to the Joplin tornado recovery, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," and Baja SAE Kansas, all headlining topics in which PSU faculty, students and staff have been heavily involved.

Additionally, the conference will feature Dr. C.J. Huff, Joplin's superintendent of schools, as the keynote speaker at Friday's wrap-up banquet, held at noon in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom.
