The Princeton Review has once again selected Pittsburg State University as one of the best colleges and universities in the Midwest. PSU was one of 153 institutions that the Review singled out the "Best in the Midwest" section of its website feature, "2012 Best Colleges: Region by Region," which posted on Aug. 1.
The Review quoted PSU students who described the university as an affordable small school with a big-university feel, where classes are small, students are friendly, and faculty are both knowledgeable and caring.
The 153 colleges that The Princeton Review chose for its "Best in the Midwest" list are located in 12 states: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
According to Robert Franek, Princeton Review's senior VP/publisher, the Review chose institutions for its 'regional best' list mainly for their academic programs. To compile its list, Franek said, the Review used information it collected from the universities, visits to schools over the years, and opinions of staff college counselors and advisers.
The Review also surveyed students, whose comments are posted on the website. Students were asked to rate the universities they attended in a variety of areas, ranging from the quality of the professors to the community environment and campus food.
Bill Ivy, associate vice president for enrollment management and student success at PSU, said students look for many things when choosing a university.
"It begins with strong academic programs," Ivy said. "Beyond that, students look for a friendly, welcoming campus and community; faculty and staff who care about them personally; and a university that is affordable. We work hard every day to ensure that all those are true at Pittsburg State."
