Pittsburg State University Provost Lynette Olson announced today that Dr. Paul W. Grimes had been selected as the next dean of the university's Kelce College of Business. Grimes is currently the associate dean for Instruction and Operations for the College of Business at Mississippi State University.
"Dr. Grimes has a distinguished academic and administrative record and we believe he is very well suited to lead the Kelce College of Business at this important time in its history," Olson said. "His commitment to teaching, research and service is a good match to those same values that are part of the history and culture of the College of Business and the university."
Grimes, who holds both a bachelor of science degree and a master's degree in economics from PSU, said he is excited to return to his alma mater.
"I am thrilled to be coming home to Pittsburg State University. This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I am pleased it came along when it did," Grimes said.
Grimes praised the College of Business faculty for their dedication to academics and student success.
"The College of Business faculty is an outstanding group. They are strong in teaching and they are great researchers who are committed to the university and to students. I'm looking forward to working with them," he said.
Grimes said one of the things that he found attractive about returning to Pittsburg State was the university's leadership.
"Pittsburg State has a very strong leadership team with a clear vision for the university's future," Grimes said. "I appreciate the confidence President Scott and Provost Olson have shown in me and I look forward to working with them to advance not only the Kelce College of Business, but the university as a whole."
Grimes served as an assistant professor of economics at Western Illinois University from 1984 until joining the faculty at Mississippi State University College of Business in 1987.
In addition to his two degrees from Pittsburg State University, Grimes also holds an A.A. degree from Fort Scott Community College and a Ph.D. in economics from Oklahoma State University.
At Mississippi State, Grimes served as head of the Department of Finance and Economics from 2000 until 2009, when he was named associate dean for Instruction and Operations. In 2003, he founded the Mississippi State University Center for Economic Education and Financial Literacy, a post he still holds.
Grimes has received numerous teaching and research awards and in 2004 received the PSU Outstanding Alumni Award from the PSU Alumni Association. He has written and published a long list of articles and papers and is co-author of the best selling Economics of Social Issues introductory college textbook.
This spring, Grimes was named editor-in-chief for The American Economist, the academic journal published by Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international honor society in economics. He previously served as associate editor of the Journal of Economic Education.
