Dr. Linden Dalecki, a management and marketing professor at Pittsburg State University, is excited that two Southeast Kansas companies are in the running for the prestigious 2012 Kansas Governor’s Exporter of the Year Award.

The Kansas Department of Commerce and the Kansas International Trade Coordinating Council (KITCC), of which Dalecki is associate chairman, announced this week that Pitsco, Inc., a Pittsburg-based educational supply company; and Tank Connection, a Parsons-based industry supplier of tank storage systems, are among the five finalists for the award.

“The fact that 40 percent of the 2012 finalists are located in Southeast Kansas reflects the dynamism and global perspective of entrepreneurs in our segment of the state,” Dalecki said.

“Knowing that Tank Connection and Pitsco employ high numbers of Pitt State grads is the icing on the cake.”

Both companies are led by PSU alumni, as well.

The finalists were selected from a pool of 15 applicants and were evaluated by a panel of economic development and international trade practitioners. The winner will be announced June 12 at the annual Kansas Cavalry Encampment, the state’s annual business awards ceremony, at the K-State Alumni Center in Manhattan. The win comes with a special presentation by the governor and is followed by a site visit to the winning company.

For more than 24 years, the Governor’s Exporter of the Year Award has been presented to Kansas companies for exceptional international marketing success. The award is designed to encourage the growth of the state’s international commerce by showcasing successful exporters as business role models.

The KITCC will also be part of an exciting event at PSU on April 18 when the Kelce College of Business, the City of Pittsburg and the Kansas Department of Commerce, holds the Southeast Kansas International Trade Symposium in PSU’s Overman Student Center. The half-day event is an opportunity for the business community to meet the service sector for a chance to learn and share information.

“At its heart, this event is about successful Kansas exporters helping local businesspeople understand key steps to take in order to go global,” Dalecki said. “It’s a testament to Pittsburg area businesses, the Kansas Department of Commerce and the state as a whole to see a community-enriching event like this come together. I’m proud to be a part of it.”
